The Hollingsworth Winds was formed in 2003 by Frank Howes, retired Polk County Schools Senior Director of Fine Arts, and Dr. Jo Jossim, Director of Bands at Florida Southern College. Mr. Wansley has served as the ensemble’s conductor since 2009. The band was designed to unite musicians from the community and provide opportunities for wind players and percussionists to perform high-quality literature in formal concert settings. Programming for each concert includes wind music that spans a broad difficulty level. The founders of the Hollingsworth Winds wanted to educate their audiences about wind band literature. To this end, the printed program notes often found inside the program are delivered to the audience through the Voice of the Hollingsworth Winds, retired band director Jimmy Parker.
Ivan G. Wansley is in his 16th season as the Artisitc Director/Conductor of The Hollingsworth Winds and his 49th year as a Music Educator. Prior to his retirement, Mr. Wansley had successful teaching tenures at the middle school, junior high school, high school, and college/university levels. While teaching in the public schools of Florida, his bands consistently earned the highest rating of Superior in all areas at the district and state levels. Mr. Wansley was the first director in the history of Immokalee High School to earn a Superior at a FBA event. At Cape Coral High School he was named “Teacher of the Year” and the CCHS marching band participated in the Cotton Bowl Parade in Dallas, Texas. At Vero Beach Junior High School, Mr. Wansley had three concert bands earn a Superior in the same year. Mr. Wansley earned his BA degree in Music Education/Fines Arts and his MA in Wind Conducting from the University of South Florida in Tampa. A few of his professional affiliations include the Phi Beta Mu Professional Bandmasters Fraternity and the American School Band Directors Association.
Tyler Arcari is a composer, arranger, author, and clinician who currently serves as Director of Music Production and Editing at Excelcia Music Publishing LLC, Wingert-Jones Publications, Kendor Music Publishing, and RBC Publications. His works are performed regularly around the world. He received his B.A. and M.S. degrees in music education from Troy University, where he studied composition with Ralph Ford and euphonium with Dr. Mark J. Walker. As a teacher, Tyler has taught at both the middle and high school levels. His primary focus as a composer has been writing for young musicians—a passion that grew out of his classroom teaching experience and continues to guide his work today.
Music by Larry Clark is some of the most popular and most performed by concert bands and string orchestras of all ability levels. Larry is equally adept at writing music for beginners as he is for high school and colleges. His music is tuneful, contains a fresh harmonic perspective, is well-scored and stretches the musicianship of the performers. His pieces have been performed internationally and appear on numerous contest/festival performance required music lists. Larry is also the founder and President of Excelcia Music Publishing, which includes Wingert-Jones Publications, Kendor Music Publishing and RBC Publications. His compositions and background as a middle school and university band director at Syracuse University, combined with his composing, have placed Larry at the forefront of music education. He holds a Bachelors Degree in Music Education from Florida State University and Masters Degrees in Conducting and Composition from James Madison University in Virginia.
